Evertz Technologies Limited (TSX: ET) reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue of C$118.3 million, up 5.5% from C$112.1 million a year earlier, as international sales and software and services growth offset a relatively flat North American performance. Software and services revenue rose 14% to C$58.9 million and accounted for almost half of total quarterly sales, while hardware revenue eased to approximately C$59.3 million. The company ended August with more than C$259 million of purchase-order backlog and shipped another approximately C$30 million during August, creating more than C$289 million of combined backlog and recent shipments. However, net earnings fell to C$8.0 million from C$11.9 million, while diluted earnings per share declined to C$0.10 from C$0.15 as margins and operating profitability weakened.
Evertz Technologies Limited shares closed at C$14.85 on September 11 before the September 14 after-market earnings release. The stock had been trading below early-September levels around C$15.50, leaving the next session important for determining how investors balance stronger backlog against lower earnings and cash generation.
The result captures an important transition in broadcast technology. Evertz Technologies Limited increasingly sells software-defined video networking, cloud, IP production, replay and workflow technologies rather than depending entirely on traditional hardware shipments, creating a larger recurring and software-oriented revenue opportunity but also requiring continued heavy research spending.
Why is Evertz Technologies Limited’s C$259 million order backlog strategically important?
Backlog provides future revenue visibility in an industry where large broadcasters, media groups, governments and enterprises can take months or years to deploy complex infrastructure. The C$259 million order backlog at August 31 was 9% higher than the level reported at the end of May, suggesting order intake continued to exceed recognised revenue through much of the summer. Combined with C$30 million shipped in August, Evertz Technologies Limited entered the second quarter with substantial commercial activity already identified.
The company attributed demand to continued migration from traditional broadcast hardware toward IP, IT and cloud-based architectures. Evertz Technologies Limited says it has more than 600 IP software-defined networking deployments and serves customers across major media organisations, government, defence and enterprise markets.
This transition matters because broadcasters increasingly need infrastructure that can distribute high-resolution video across conventional television, streaming platforms, mobile devices and remote production environments. Software-defined networks can make those workflows more flexible because routing and processing are managed through software rather than rigid dedicated hardware chains.
A large backlog does not guarantee margins, however. Product mix, installation timing, customer acceptance and deployment costs determine how much backlog converts into operating profit. The next few quarters will therefore show whether the C$259 million order book merely supports revenue growth or also restores earnings momentum.
Why did Evertz Technologies Limited earnings fall even though revenue increased?
Gross profit remained relatively stable at approximately C$69.3 million compared with C$68.8 million a year earlier, but gross margin compressed to 58.6% from 61.4%. That reduction matters because each percentage point of gross margin affects earnings materially on more than C$100 million of quarterly revenue.
Operating expenses also increased. Selling and administrative costs rose to C$19.9 million from C$18.6 million, while gross research and development spending increased to C$38.5 million from C$37.0 million. Earnings from operations consequently fell to C$11.0 million from C$15.0 million.
The company’s R&D intensity reflects the pace at which broadcast and cloud infrastructure is evolving. Evertz Technologies Limited competes in technologies spanning video-over-IP, cloud workflows, production automation, ultra-high-definition systems, replay, audio and network orchestration, requiring substantial product development even when quarterly earnings are under pressure.
The critical question is whether the higher software and services mix eventually improves operating leverage. Software and services already represented 49.8% of revenue during the quarter, but the overall gross-margin decline shows that investors should not assume a higher software percentage automatically produces immediate margin expansion.
Why is international growth becoming more important for Evertz Technologies Limited?
United States and Canadian revenue was C$79.9 million, only around 1% higher than the prior year, while international revenue increased approximately 17.5% to C$38.3 million from C$32.7 million. International sales therefore accounted for roughly 32% of quarterly revenue and provided most of the company’s overall top-line growth.
That diversification helps Evertz Technologies Limited reduce dependence on North American broadcaster capital budgets. Large sports broadcasters, streaming platforms, public broadcasters and production facilities in Europe, Asia and the Middle East are all undertaking similar transitions toward IP and cloud workflows.
The company also reported a broad customer base, with its top ten customers representing approximately 49% of quarterly sales and no individual customer accounting for more than 10%. Management said Evertz Technologies Limited recorded 87 separate customer orders above C$200,000 during the quarter.
Customer diversification is useful in project-based technology infrastructure because individual deployment schedules can move between quarters. A broader order base reduces the risk that one delayed customer materially changes the annual revenue trajectory.
Should investors worry about Evertz Technologies Limited’s cash decline during the quarter?
Cash net of bank indebtedness fell to C$2.5 million at July 31 from C$19.1 million at April 30. Cash generated from operations was only C$0.8 million, compared with C$33.5 million during the prior-year quarter, even though operating cash generation before taxes and changes in non-cash working capital was unchanged at C$16.8 million.
The difference indicates that working-capital movements and taxes had a major effect on reported cash conversion. Large project businesses can experience quarter-to-quarter swings as inventory, receivables and customer-payment timing change, so one weak quarter does not by itself establish a structural deterioration.
Working capital remained substantial at approximately C$131.4 million, almost unchanged from year-end. That provides more context than the low net-cash figure alone and suggests the company still has a sizeable current-asset cushion supporting operations.
The board also declared a regular quarterly dividend of C$0.205 per share, signalling that management continues to view the balance sheet as capable of supporting shareholder distributions. Nevertheless, improving cash conversion would strengthen that confidence because sustained dividends ultimately require recurring free cash flow rather than accounting earnings.
What could determine whether Evertz Technologies Limited regains earnings momentum?
The first factor is backlog conversion. More than C$259 million of orders provides a strong starting position, but revenue recognition must occur at margins sufficient to overcome rising operating expenses. The second factor is product mix, particularly whether software-defined networking, cloud and services revenue can expand without sacrificing gross margin.
The third factor is R&D productivity. C$38.5 million of gross quarterly research spending is substantial relative to C$118.3 million of revenue, meaning new products need to support market share, pricing and customer retention. Evertz Technologies Limited’s large installed base gives it an opportunity to monetise upgrades as broadcast systems continue shifting toward software-based architectures.
The fourth factor is international demand. North American revenue was largely flat during the first quarter, so continued double-digit growth internationally would provide an important source of incremental scale if domestic media capital spending remains uneven.
Evertz Technologies Limited therefore begins fiscal 2027 with stronger revenue and order visibility but weaker earnings quality than the headline sales growth might suggest. The next few quarters will determine whether the backlog becomes an earnings recovery or whether margin compression continues absorbing the benefit of higher demand.
