Escondida, operated by BHP, has initiated a significant environmental project aimed at reducing by introducing an system for its mining trucks. This initiative is part of BHP’s broader commitment to achieve net zero operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The project, with an investment of approximately US$ 250 million, was recently propelled forward with the submission of an Statement (DIA) to the Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA).

The project, titled “Implementation of the Mining Truck Electrification System in Escondida Norte,” involves the construction of a new electrical substation and transmission lines both within and surrounding the Escondida Norte pit. These installations aim to provide electrical assistance to the movement of mining trucks, particularly in areas where they ascend loaded with ore, which is currently a high fuel consumption activity. By switching from diesel to electric power, the trucks are expected to operate more efficiently, achieving faster speeds and reducing fuel costs.

Alejandro Tapia, President of Escondida | BHP, highlighted the dual benefits of the project, stating, “The electric trolley system is one of the initiatives with which we seek to move towards a safer and more sustainable way of operating hand in hand with technology. This project will allow us to reduce the fuel consumption of our extraction trucks and thus advance our goal of net zero operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.” The system not only aims to cut down on carbon emissions but also to enhance the productivity associated with truck performance.

During the construction phase of the electric trolley system, the project is expected to employ an average of 112 people per day, with a peak workforce of 160 people. This injection of jobs is anticipated to provide a significant boost to the local economy while contributing to the sustainable transformation of one of the world’s largest copper mines.

In addition to the electric trolley system, Escondida | BHP is exploring other technological innovations, including the progressive incorporation of autonomous mining equipment. The mine currently operates six autonomous trucks and plans to expand this fleet, aiming to establish the largest array of autonomous mining equipment in South America by 2025.

This ambitious project by Escondida | BHP is a pivotal step in the mining industry’s shift towards more . By reducing reliance on diesel and integrating more electric and autonomous technologies, Escondida is not only addressing environmental concerns but is also setting a benchmark for operational efficiency in the mining sector. The successful implementation of this project could serve as a model for other mines worldwide, emphasizing the viability of sustainable practices in reducing carbon footprints and enhancing mining efficiency.
