Epic upset! Markéta Vondroušová defies odds to make Wimbledon history!
Markéta Vondroušová of the Czech Republic has triumphed at the Wimbledon Championships 2023, winning the women’s singles title in a straight-sets victory over Ons Jabeur, 6-4, 6-4.
The Saturday, July 15 final saw Markéta Vondroušová become the first unseeded player in the Open Era to clinch the prestigious women’s singles championship at Wimbledon. Vondroušová, currently ranked 48th in the WTA, made an impressive comeback against Tunisian player Jabeur, who suffered a second consecutive defeat in the Wimbledon final.

While experts had predicted a challenging final match against Jabeur, Vondroušová managed to secure decisive breaks in both sets, ultimately claiming the title. This victory marks the first Wimbledon win for a Czech woman since Petra Kvitova’s triumph in 2014, and the first for a left-handed player since Germany’s Angelique Kerber in 2018.
Despite being initially on the back foot, Vondroušová quickly rallied, breaking Jabeur’s serve six times in the 80-minute final. These strategic breaks turned the tide in Vondroušová’s favor. Although Jabeur, known for her strong forehand, hit 25 winners to Vondroušová’s 10, a high number of unforced errors cost Jabeur the match.

24-year-old Vondroušová’s route to the Wimbledon final involved defeating several top-seeded players, including wild card entrant Elina Svitolina and No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula. This victory places Vondroušová in the esteemed company of other Wimbledon singles champions like Jana Novotna, Petra Kvitova, and Martina Navratilova.
In winning Wimbledon, Markéta Vondroušová also surpassed Venus Williams’ record as the lowest seed to secure the women’s singles championship, a title Williams had held since her 2007 victory. Vondroušová is also the first unseeded champion at SW19 since Goran Ivanišević in 2001, who claimed the title as a wildcard entry. Alongside Ivanišević, she also matches the achievement of Boris Becker, who won Wimbledon as an unseeded player in 1985.
