ENGIE collaborates with Google to expand carbon-free operations in Belgium
ENGIE, a leader in low-carbon energy solutions, has announced its support for Google‘s operational expansion in Belgium through five new corporate power purchase agreements (cPPAs). This collaboration highlights a robust partnership aimed at achieving Google’s ambitious goal of net-zero emissions and 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.
ENGIE will provide Google with the full output of four new onshore wind farms in Belgium, collectively adding 26 MW to the grid. Additionally, an existing agreement for 92 MW from another wind park has been extended for eight years, culminating in a total of over 118 MW of renewable capacity dedicated to powering Google’s Belgian infrastructure.
These agreements are pivotal, not only for their immediate environmental benefits but also for bolstering ENGIE’s leadership in the PPA market. In 2023 alone, ENGIE secured 2.4 GW of green electricity commitments from various corporate clients, showcasing its dominant position in solar, onshore wind, and offshore wind sectors.
Under its #ENERGIZE2030 strategy, ENGIE is committed to accelerating the renewable energy capacity in Belgium to 2.5 GW by 2030. This initiative will draw upon ENGIE’s global expertise to deliver a carbon-free, reliable, and affordable energy system.
The partnership between ENGIE and Google is a model of how technology giants can leverage relationships with energy specialists to meet stringent sustainability targets. This collaboration not only supports Google’s carbon-neutral ambitions but also enhances ENGIE’s reputation as a top developer of clean energy solutions globally.
Vincent Verbeke, CEO of ENGIE Belgium, expressed enthusiasm about partnering with tech industry leaders like Google to support sustainable energy advancements. Frederic Descamps, Google’s Data Center Lead in Belgium, reiterated Google’s commitment to sustainability and its strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030 with the support of partners like ENGIE.
The strategic alliance between ENGIE and Google in Belgium is set to create significant advancements in carbon-free energy solutions. This collaboration serves as a blueprint for other companies aiming to enhance their sustainability practices through strategic partnerships.
