In an astounding turn of events, the Indian Parliament witnessed a major security breach during Zero Hour at 1.02 pm on Wednesday, as two men carrying smoke canisters emitting yellow smoke stormed into the Lok Sabha chamber.
The Lok Sabha was thrown into chaos as CCTV footage captured one man, dressed in a dark blue shirt, leaping across desks in a daring attempt to evade capture. His accomplice, in the visitors’ gallery, was seen spraying smoke, adding to the pandemonium. Incredibly, both intruders were swiftly overpowered by quick-acting MPs and security staff.
Dramatic Scenes Unfold in Parliament
The Lok Sabha resumed at 2 pm, following this unprecedented incident, with Speaker Om Birla addressing the understandably agitated MPs. He confirmed an ongoing investigation involving Delhi Police. The intruders, identified as Sagar Sharma and D Manoranjan, were apprehended, and materials they carried were seized. In a shocking development, two more individuals were arrested outside Parliament, both equipped with colored pressurized canisters.
The Intruders: Who are They?
Visuals from ANI showed the incident unfolding in real-time, with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri and Anupriya Patel present during the ordeal. The intruders managed to bypass five levels of security, raising serious concerns about the safety protocols in place. The visitor’s pass, found with the intruders, was issued by BJP MP Pratap Simha’s office, further complicating the narrative.
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram and Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay expressed their shock and concerns over the security lapse, highlighting the potential danger of the situation.
Delhi Police Investigates Potential Links
Delhi Police’s anti-terror unit is now spearheading the investigation into both incidents inside and outside the Parliament. The external perpetrators, identified as Amol Shinde and Neelam, were seen shouting slogans against dictatorship, adding to the intrigue of the entire episode.
This security breach, occurring on the 22nd anniversary of the terror attack on the old Parliament building, raises serious questions about the current state of security measures in one of the nation’s most crucial establishments. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu’s earlier tribute to the 2001 Parliament attack victims adds a poignant backdrop to this alarming incident.
