DoorDash (NASDAQ: DASH), a leading local commerce platform, and Walgreens (NASDAQ: WBA), a trusted neighborhood health destination, have announced a groundbreaking collaboration to enable nearly 7,800 Walgreens stores across the United States to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)/Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) payments. This initiative marks DoorDash as the first platform to allow SNAP customers to purchase directly from Walgreens using their EBT cards, and the first third-party delivery service provider to offer SNAP/EBT as a payment option at a major drugstore nationwide.
With the addition of Walgreens, DoorDash significantly expands its reach, more than doubling the number of stores available for on-demand delivery with SNAP/EBT payments on its platform. This expansion aims to enhance food access to over 14 million people living in food deserts and more than 40 million residents in communities with high SNAP/EBT usage.
Fuad Hannon, VP of New Verticals at DoorDash, highlighted the impact of this partnership: “Since launching support for SNAP/EBT payments in 2023, over 1.1 million consumers have added their SNAP/EBT cards to DoorDash. This first-of-its-kind partnership with Walgreens offers convenient and critical access to food and pantry essentials for families and individuals across the country.”
Walgreens will offer over 4,000 SNAP-eligible products for delivery within an hour through DoorDash. This service provides a practical solution for consumers needing quick access to essential groceries and household items, such as milk, oatmeal, nuts, and snacks, directly through the DoorDash app.
Balachandra Visalatha, SVP, Chief Product Officer at Walgreens, commented on the convenience this collaboration brings to consumers: “This collaboration with DoorDash means our shoppers can now get essential grocery items when they want, regardless of payment method and other barriers like work schedules and transportation.”
The collaboration not only streamlines the process of purchasing daily necessities but also underscores DoorDash’s commitment to increasing food accessibility. The initiative includes exclusive offers like $0 delivery fees on up to three orders paid with SNAP at Walgreens for non-DashPass subscribers. DashPass members continue to enjoy added benefits across a wide array of restaurants, grocery, and convenience stores.
This partnership represents a significant step in leveraging technology and collaboration to address food insecurity and improve the shopping experience for SNAP recipients nationwide. By integrating advanced delivery services with flexible payment options, DoorDash and Walgreens are setting a new standard for service in the retail and food delivery industries.
The strategic alliance between DoorDash and Walgreens is a transformative move in the retail and delivery sectors, promising to enhance the quality of life for millions of Americans. By facilitating easier access to essential products, this partnership is poised to make a positive impact on food accessibility and consumer convenience across the country.
