Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), India’s largest power generating equipment manufacturer, has clinched a prestigious order for the Electro-Mechanical (E&M) works of India’s largest capacity hydropower project—the 2.88GW Dibang Multipurpose Project in Arunachal Pradesh. This monumental win came in the face of intense competition under International Competitive Bidding and has been placed by NHPC.

Scope and Execution of Dibang Multipurpose Project : The Detailed Breakdown

BHEL’s extensive scope in this contract includes design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection, and commissioning of a comprehensive electro-mechanical package. This encompasses Turbines, Generators, Digital Governing Systems, Static Excitation Systems, Transformers, Bus Reactors, Gas Insulated Switchgear, Outdoor Pot Yard & Switchyard Equipment, and Electrical & Mechanical BoPs. Major equipment for this mega project will be manufactured at BHEL’s plants in Bhopal, Bengaluru, Jhansi, and Rudrapur. Execution activities will be led by BHEL’s Power Sector – Eastern Region division in Kolkata.

A Four-Decade Association with NHPC

BHEL and NHPC have enjoyed a long-term partnership that stretches over 4 decades, with the commissioning of the first project, Bairasul (3×60 MW), in 1981. Currently, BHEL is also executing orders for the 850 MW Ratle HEP (J&K) and the renovation and modernization of the 105 MW Loktak HEP (Manipur) for NHPC.

BHEL’s Massive Footprint in Hydro Power

With an installed base of over 1,97,000 MW globally, BHEL is an undisputed leader in India’s hydro segment. Boasting a portfolio of over 500 hydroelectric sets with a total capacity of more than 32,000 MW in India and abroad, BHEL is presently executing hydroelectric projects totaling 4,200 MW in India and 3,200 MW abroad. This includes significant projects like the 12×80 MW Polavaram HEP and 4×111 MW Vishnugad Pipalkoti, among others.
