In a tragic incident that shook the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India, at least 24 people, including seven children, lost their lives when a farm tractor pulling a wagon loaded with devotees overturned and fell into a pond. The accident occurred in the Kasganj district on the morning of Saturday, February 24, around 10 am, on the Patiali Dariyavganj road. The wagon, carrying around 40 devotees to the River Ganga for a ritual bath, veered off the road, leading to a catastrophic overturn.
Police and local officials reported that the accident not only resulted in the loss of 24 lives but also left over a dozen others injured, some seriously. The local community promptly responded to the accident, with people rushing to the site to rescue passengers. Despite their efforts, the Chief Medical Officer Rajiv Aggarwal confirmed the high casualty toll.
In response to this heart-wrenching incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced compensation for the victims’ families and the injured. Families of the deceased will receive 2,412.86 USD, while those who suffered injuries will be given 603.22 USD. Through a post on his official X handle, Yogi Adityanath expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved families and described the loss of lives as “extremely heart-wrenching.”
Furthermore, the Chief Minister has instructed district administration officials to ensure proper free treatment for all the injured. He extended his prayers for the departed souls and wished a speedy recovery to those injured, emphasizing the state’s commitment to supporting the victims and their families during this difficult time.
This incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved road safety measures and strict adherence to traffic regulations in India. The tragedy not only mourns the loss of life but serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers on the road, especially in rural areas where such large gatherings and religious processions are common.
The Kasganj accident is a stark reminder of the critical importance of road safety, especially in densely populated regions like Uttar Pradesh. This tragedy underscores the need for stringent safety protocols, better road infrastructure, and awareness campaigns to prevent such devastating incidents in the future. Additionally, the prompt response from the local community and the compensation announced by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reflect the solidarity and support system that plays a vital role in the aftermath of such accidents.
