Deadly bus crash in Odisha’s Ganjam district results in 12 fatalities

A tragic road accident in Ganjam district, Odisha, India, has resulted in at least 12 fatalities, including two minors, and numerous injuries. The incident, a head-on collision involving an Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) bus and a private bus, occurred near Digapahandi early on Monday.

The injured passengers from both buses have been transported to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for treatment. An official indicated that one critically injured individual had been moved to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. The official assured that arrangements were in place for the care of all the injured.

Authorities suggest that the incident appears to be a head-on collision occurring at around 1 am. The OSRTC bus was traveling from Rayagada to Bhubaneswar, while the private bus was returning from a wedding in Berhampur from Khandadeuli village. Most fatalities and severe injuries were reported among the private bus passengers, while OSRTC bus passengers sustained minor injuries.

After the crash, local police and fire services personnel rushed to the scene to rescue passengers. The authorities are still investigating to ascertain the exact cause of the incident.

In response to the tragic accident, the Odisha government announced aid of Rs 30,000 for each injured person for their medical treatment. The latest reports indicate that two more people succumbed to their injuries, bringing the total fatalities to 12.
