Canadian Solar expands operations with advanced wafer facility in Thailand
Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ), headquartered in Guelph, Ontario, has announced the establishment of a significant new solar PV wafer production facility in Chonburi, Thailand.
State-of-the-Art Solar Manufacturing Capacity
The company is constructing a state-of-the-art, 5 GW solar photovoltaic N-type wafer manufacturing plant, with production expected to start in March 2024. Initially, the solar wafers produced here will be used at the existing Thailand TOPCon cell manufacturing plant in the same location. Starting in 2025, these wafers will serve as inputs to Canadian Solar‘s new 5 GW U.S. cell factory in Jeffersonville, Indiana, upon its completion.
Strategic Importance of the New Facility
Thomas Koerner, Senior Vice President of Canadian Solar, emphasized the strategic importance of the Thai facility. “This new solar wafer factory in Thailand is a key milestone for serving our U.S. customers with a diversified and resilient supply chain,” he stated. The facility is also a response to the latest AD/CVD ruling by the U.S. Department of Commerce, enabling Canadian Solar to meet new requirements responsibly.
