BMW to invest in Plant San Luis Potosí to accelerate EV production in Mexico

The BMW Group will invest €800 million in Plant San Luis Potosí, Mexico, for the production of its Neue Klasse model and construction of local high-voltage battery assembly.

With the proposed investment, the German carmaker anticipates to ramp-up its e-mobility manufacturing network for the production of its next generation vehicle Neue Klasse.

BMW Group has allocated €500 million from the announced investment for the construction of a new assembly centre for high-voltage batteries.

The 85,000 m2- assembly centre will come up on the plant grounds in San Luis Potosí and provide employment to more than 500 people.

The BMW Group will integrate its next generation car Neue Klasse at Plant San Luis Potosí and produce next generation batteries for fully-electric vehicles at the battery assembly.

Milan Nedeljković — BMW AG Board of Management Member for San Luis Potosí Production, said: “The first cars of the Neue Klasse will come off the production line at our plant in Debrecen, Hungary, starting in 2025, followed by the main plant in Munich.

“We will achieve additional volumes by integrating the Neue Klasse at Plant San Luis Potosí from 2027 onwards.”

Plant San Luis Potosí, which went live in 2019, already manufactures the BMW 3 Series, 2 Series Coupé and the new M2– in some cases.

The facility features the BMW Group’s first paint shop, which treats the water required for the painting process and then reuses.

Plant San Luis Potosí also uses green power generated from more than 70,000m2 solar power installation on the plant grounds and renewable energy from an external solar plant.

The Neue Klasse models will use new, round lithium-ion battery cells specifically developed for what will then be BMW eDrive technology sixth generation.

Recently, the BMW Group has announced an investment of $1.7 billion to expand its Spartanburg manufacturing facility in the US, which includes $1 billion for preparations of electric vehicles production and $700 million for a new assembly centre for high-voltage batteries in nearby Woodruff.

The German carmaker anticipates to construct no less than six fully-electric models in the US by the end of this decade.
