Bangalore to house AMD’s largest design center following $400m investment

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has unveiled plans at SemiconIndia 2023 to inject around $400M into its India operations over the next five years, a move highlighting the American semiconductor company’s commitment to India’s burgeoning semiconductor industry. This strategic investment will usher in AMD’s largest design center, located in Bangalore, Karnataka, and it is expected to create around 3,000 engineering roles by the culmination of 2028.

To be operational by the end of 2023, the Bangalore-based AMD campus will be equipped with advanced collaboration tools and seating layouts to promote teamwork. The new center, featuring extensive lab space, is seen as a response to the Indian Government’s policy initiatives targeting the semiconductor sector.

India’s Union Cabinet Minister for Railways, Telecommunications, Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “We welcome the AMD plan to expand its leading-edge R&D engineering operations in India.”

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, also welcomed AMD’s move. He said, “It will certainly play an important role in building a world class semiconductor design and innovation ecosystem. It will also provide tremendous opportunities for our large pool of highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers and will catalyse PM Narendra Modi’s vision of India becoming a global talent hub.”

Mark Papermaster, executive vice president and chief technology officer at AMD, spoke about the company’s trajectory in India from its early days in 2001. He stated, “AMD has one of the industry’s broadest product portfolios fueled by growth in artificial intelligence, networking and 6G communications, and our India teams will continue to play a pivotal role in delivering the high-performance and adaptive solutions that support AMD customers worldwide.”

The new 500,000-square-foot Bangalore campus will expand the AMD’s footprint to 10 locations across Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, reinforcing the company’s commitment to India’s Semiconductor Mission.
