In a significant advancement for renewable energy, the innovative joint venture between RSK Group and Nova Innovation, known as AquaGen365, has successfully launched its first floating solar project. This pioneering initiative is set in the Port of Leith, Edinburgh, marking a key milestone in utilizing water bodies for sustainable energy production. This project not only powers Forth Ports’ headquarters with clean, low-cost energy but also showcases the potential of floating solar to meet significant energy needs—projected to generate 9343 terawatt hours (TWh) globally, an amount sufficient to triple Europe’s current electricity consumption.

Amid global challenges such as land scarcity and water resource depletion, floating solar offers a unique solution by utilizing untapped water surfaces. This method not only conserves land but also reduces water evaporation from these bodies, further contributing to environmental sustainability.

David Taylor, RSK Director, highlighted the broad implications of floating solar technology: “This approach provides clean, predictable, and low-cost energy using technology that is both reliable and scalable. Floating solar is particularly compelling where land use is not viable, offering rapid deployment and significant water conservation benefits, potentially reducing surface evaporation by up to 42%.”

The initiative by AquaGen365 reflects a strategic collaboration that leverages RSK’s global reach and Nova Innovation’s expertise in marine energy. Together, they bring over 20 years of experience in renewable energy through various forms, including tidal, wind, and hydro power technologies.

Simon Forrest, CEO of Nova Innovation, emphasized the strategic impact of floating solar: “Floating solar represents a significant step forward in our quest for sustainable energy solutions. It is particularly advantageous in regions where land is at a premium.
