Bharti Airtel, one of India’s largest telecommunications service providers, has significantly upgraded its network across Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Leh Ladakh, to deliver enhanced voice and data services. Following the acquisition of additional spectrum in July 2024, Airtel completed the deployment of 5MHz on the 2100 band and 3.8MHz on the 900 band across all 22 districts, marking a major step in strengthening its 4G and 5G network capabilities. This expansion is expected to dramatically improve browsing speeds, indoor coverage, and overall customer experience in both urban and rural areas.
This strategic move is poised to meet the growing demands for connectivity across the Union Territories. Airtel is not only boosting voice and data speeds but also ensuring more reliable service along key highways and railways. The additional spectrum also solidifies Airtel’s presence in rural markets, which are seeing a significant rise in demand for quality internet services. The company has prioritized better indoor coverage, addressing one of the key challenges in these regions.
Adarsh Verma, Chief Operating Officer for Jammu and Kashmir at Bharti Airtel, said that the company’s commitment to superior network performance remains unwavering. He noted that with this expanded spectrum, customers across Jammu, Srinagar, and Leh Ladakh can expect more reliable call connectivity, faster data speeds, and enhanced overall performance. He emphasized Airtel’s continued focus on investing in state-of-the-art technologies that will consistently elevate customer experiences in the region.
The recent spectrum acquisition, part of a broader strategic vision, has further strengthened Airtel’s competitive advantage. The company now holds a larger share of mid-band spectrum, positioning it well to accommodate the rapid growth in data consumption across India. Airtel’s acquisition of 97 MHz of spectrum during the latest auctions has also helped consolidate its fragmented spectrum blocks, ensuring a more efficient network and higher quality services.
Bharti Airtel’s approach involves not only expanding its 4G/5G network but also re-farming mid-band spectrum for 5G services to keep up with India’s accelerating data consumption. The company’s significant investments have placed it among the top mobile operators globally, serving over 550 million customers across South Asia and Africa. In India, Airtel leads the telecommunications market with its diverse spectrum holdings across the 900, 1800, 2100, and 2300 MHz bands.
With competition fierce and customers demanding ever-increasing speeds, Bharti Airtel’s investments are vital to maintaining its leadership in the telecommunications industry.
Airtel’s spectrum acquisition and network expansion reflect a broader industry trend towards fortifying infrastructure in traditionally underserved regions. Improving connectivity in remote areas like Jammu and Kashmir is critical for the company’s long-term strategy. Airtel’s investments in these regions are not just about adding capacity, but ensuring that they remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market where 5G adoption will soon dominate. While Airtel is focusing on customer experience, this investment also has significant economic implications for the region.
