Spectacular save! Firefighters quench flames at Rouen Cathedral, preventing another Notre Dame tragedy!

A fire that ignited in the spire of Rouen Cathedral in Normandy, France, on Thursday was quickly extinguished, averting what could have been a major disaster. The cathedral, a towering Gothic structure and a significant historical landmark, was undergoing renovations when the fire broke out. Local emergency services, including over 60 firefighters, responded promptly to the scene, ensuring the fire was contained and damage minimized.

The blaze, which generated black smoke and visible flames, appeared to originate from a plastic canopy covering the cathedral’s spire, which was encased in scaffolding. Fire officials have stated that an initial investigation pointed to the canopy as the source of the fire. Fortunately, due to the swift action of emergency teams, the fire was controlled and did not spread beyond the spire area, where materials were predominantly metal, reducing the risk of further spread.

Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, Mayor of Rouen, was quick to communicate about the incident on social media, reassuring the public that the situation was under control. Stephane Gouezec of the Seine-Maritime firefighters reported that the fire was contained within about 90 minutes of its discovery, with efforts ongoing to ensure no remaining hot spots could reignite.

The cathedral, which boasts the title of the tallest church in France and is among the highest in the world, is known for its three distinctively styled towers and has been immortalized in a series of paintings by Claude Monet. It holds a special place in the hearts of both locals and admirers of Gothic architecture globally.

Witnesses to the fire expressed initial fears, recalling the devastating 2019 blaze at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, which resulted in significant damage. However, Rouen’s cathedral has been declared safe for reopening on Friday, with Archbishop Dominique Lebrun confirming that the structure remains secure.
