In a significant development for the energy sector, Wood has secured a detailed engineering contract for the topsides facilities of Woodside Energy’s Trion Floating Production Unit (FPU) in the Mexican waters of the Gulf of Mexico. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, serving as the project’s engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) provider, awarded the contract to Wood. This marks a crucial step in realizing the Trion FPU, which, upon completion, will boast a production capacity of 100,000 barrels per day and connect to a floating storage and offloading vessel with a 950,000-barrel capacity.
First Deepwater Development in Mexico
The Trion greenfield project is set to be the first deepwater development in Mexico, situated at a water depth of 2,500 meters. Wood’s involvement in the project extends back to delivering the pre-FEED and FEED design for Trion, showcasing the company’s longstanding expertise in offshore engineering.
Wood’s Commitment to Innovation and Decarbonisation
John Day, President of Oil, Gas and Power at Wood, expressed satisfaction with the company’s selection as the topsides engineering provider. Wood’s innovative approach during the pre-FEED and FEED stages laid a solid foundation for their detailed engineering scope on the Trion project. Emphasizing safety, quality, and a practical approach to decarbonization, Wood aims to improve productivity, reduce emissions, and maximize the project’s return on investment. Wood’s proven track record with Woodside Energy, spanning two decades, further underscores the company’s capability to deliver effective solutions for the Trion project.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Enthusiasm for the Project
SeonMook Lim, Engineering Vice President of Offshore Engineering Division at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, lauded the reunion with Wood on the Trion FPU Project, recalling their previous collaboration on the East Area Natural Gas Liquids Offshore Project in West Africa in 2005. Lim expressed excitement about creating another EPC success story, leaving a lasting impact in offshore oil and gas development history.
Global Team Effort for Trion FPU
The detailed topsides design work for the FPU project will be carried out by Wood’s teams in Houston (US) and Bogota (Colombia) over the next three years. Notably, in the last decade, Wood has designed more than half of the topside facilities currently operating in the Gulf of Mexico, demonstrating its significant influence in the region’s offshore engineering landscape.
