In a significant diplomatic development, the Maldives has officially handed over 28 islands to Bharat (India) for the development of water and sewerage projects, marking a milestone in the bilateral relationship between the two countries. This initiative is part of a larger effort under India’s Line of Credit (LoC) assistance, amounting to USD 110 million, and aims to improve essential infrastructure in the archipelagic nation.
The agreement was ceremoniously marked during the visit of India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, to the Maldives. The project, which is the largest of its kind in the Maldives, involves the establishment of water supply and sewerage facilities on these 28 islands. This initiative is expected to cover approximately seven percent of the Maldivian population, addressing critical issues related to access to clean water and sanitation, which are particularly pressing in a nation comprising small, dispersed islands.
Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who was present at the handover ceremony, acknowledged the importance of this project for the local communities, highlighting how it would bring substantial economic benefits and contribute to the prosperity of the nation. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India for their continued support, underscoring the deep and historic ties between the two nations.
This move is seen as a strategic pivot by the Maldivian government, particularly given the recent history of strained relations due to the “India Out” campaign that marked President Muizzu’s rise to power. The shift suggests a renewed commitment to strengthening ties with India, which has been a longstanding ally and supporter of the Maldives, especially in critical sectors like infrastructure and climate resilience.
The development projects, apart from providing much-needed infrastructure, also reflect India’s broader strategy to counter China’s growing influence in the region. By securing these projects, India reinforces its role as a key partner in the Maldives’ development, particularly in environmentally sustainable initiatives that align with both nations’ interests.
Furthermore, these projects resonate with India’s domestic initiatives such as “Har Ghar Jal” (Water to Every Home) and “Swachh Bharat” (Clean India), demonstrating the shared vision for sustainable development. The Maldives’ government, under President Muizzu, has also emphasized the flexibility shown by India in restructuring the line of credit, which has been pivotal in accelerating these projects.
Overall, the handover of these islands for water and sewerage development marks a new chapter in Maldives-India relations, with both nations looking forward to further collaboration in various sectors
