Vestas and RWE forge ahead with Nordseecluster A offshore wind project

In a significant development for the renewable energy sector, Vestas has secured a contract from RWE to provide turbines for the 660MW Nordseecluster A offshore wind project. Situated in the eastern German North Sea, this project marks a pivotal advancement in harnessing wind power. The deal involves Vestas supplying, delivering, and commissioning 44 V236-15.0 MW turbines, a testament to the continued evolution and expansion of offshore wind capabilities.

Thomas Michel, the Chief Operating Officer of RWE Offshore Wind, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s progression into the execution phase, highlighting the importance of the forthcoming stages: “We are very pleased to enter the execution phase for our Nordseecluster A project – which itself is already a great achievement. Many thanks to all involved. Now all focus is on delivery and we are excited about the future cooperation laying ahead of us.” Vestas plans to complete the turbine installation by 2026, with subsequent maintenance ensured under a five-year service agreement followed by additional operational support.

The Nordseecluster A, along with the upcoming 900MW Nordseecluster B, forms the extensive 1.6GW Nordseecluster. This ambitious project, positioned approximately 50km north of Juist Island, is set to significantly enhance Europe’s renewable energy infrastructure. RWE’s decision to invest in this cluster in May 2024 underscores the strategic commitment to renewable energy in the region. Nordseecluster B is projected to begin construction in 2027, aiming for commercial operation by early 2029, and will utilize 60 V236-15.0 MW turbines.

Once operational, the Nordseecluster is expected to generate nearly 6.5 terawatt hours of green electricity annually, enough to power approximately 1.6 million households. This massive output demonstrates the potential of offshore wind farms in contributing to sustainable energy transitions.
