US DFC grants $553m to support Colombo Port expansion with Adani Group

In a strategic move to enhance infrastructure and promote economic development, the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) has committed a substantial investment to the tune of $553 million. This funding is allocated for the Colombo West International Terminal Pvt. Ltd. (CWIT) — a collaboration between India’s Adani Ports, Sri Lanka’s John Keells Holdings, and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

Adani Group’s First U.S. Government-Backed Project

Marking a significant milestone, this funding initiative represents the first U.S. government agency support for an Adani Group project. It reflects the confidence in the group’s capability to develop a world-class container facility at Colombo Port.

DFC CEO Scott Nathan underscored the investment’s role in fostering development without increasing sovereign debt, while U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung emphasized the investment’s alignment with broader goals for the Indo-Pacific region.

The Port of Colombo, a critical transshipment hub, is set to expand its capabilities with this financial boost, addressing the pressing need for increased capacity signaled by its high utilization rates. The terminal development is anticipated to further Colombo’s position as a primary regional hub and enhance global shipping connectivity.

Colombo West International Terminal: A Future Maritime Landmark

Upon completion, the CWIT, being developed on a BOT basis for 35 years, will stand as the largest and deepest container terminal in Sri Lanka. With the ability to handle ultra large container vessels, the new terminal is poised to significantly elevate the annual cargo handling capacity and transform Sri Lanka’s maritime infrastructure.
