Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has clinched a sensational victory for a fifth term, with her Awami League party taking an astounding half of the seats and counting. AFP reports this landmark win citing an election official.
A Dominating Performance:
The Awami League, under Hasina’s leadership, has not just won; it has decimated the competition, crossing the majority mark while the counting still continues. This triumph marks Hasina’s fifth tenure as Prime Minister, a testament to her unwavering political dominance.
Controversial Pre-Election Moves:
In a move that has stirred controversy, the Hasina government arrested thousands of rival politicians ahead of the polls. The Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by former PM Khaleda Zia, boycotted the polls. Zia, currently under house arrest following a corruption conviction, watches as the political landscape shifts dramatically.
Landslide in Gopalganj-3:
Hasina’s personal victory in the Gopalganj-3 constituency is nothing short of a landslide. With 249,965 votes to her name against a mere 469 for her closest rival, her dominance is clear. This marks her eighth win in this seat since 1986.
Awami League and Allies Sweep the Elections:
Initial results show the Awami League and its allies winning overwhelmingly. Out of 300 seats, 204 have gone to the Awami League, with its ally Jatiya Party securing nine. The media reports Hasina’s party winning more than two-thirds of the seats with nearly 90 percent of results declared.
