U.S. to enhance Ukraine’s HAWK Air Defense Systems to counter drone and missile threats
In a significant move to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities against Russian drone and cruise missile attacks, the United States has agreed to sell up to $138 million worth of equipment for maintaining and upgrading Ukraine’s HAWK air defense systems. This sale marks a continuation of U.S. military support, building on previous shipments of HAWK interceptor missiles to Ukraine in 2022 as enhancements to the less capable, shoulder-launched Stinger air defense missile systems. Additionally, Ukraine has benefitted from several air defense systems from the U.S., notably the Patriot system, further strengthening its defensive posture.
Funding for this equipment comes from a $300 million grant provided to Kyiv for foreign military financing, part of the annual defense spending bill recently enacted into law. This grant ensures Ukraine can secure these critical defense capabilities without depleting its national resources, which are already stretched thin by the prolonged conflict.
Moreover, the sale will necessitate the deployment of approximately five U.S. government employees and 15 contractor representatives to Europe, tasked with supporting training and sustainment efforts for the Ukrainian forces. The HAWK air defense system, originally an acronym for “Homing All the Way Killer,” was introduced in the 1950s. Designed to counter high-flying strategic bombers, it has undergone numerous upgrades to improve its resilience against electronic jamming and other countermeasures. The system’s adoption by over a dozen countries attests to its effectiveness and reliability in air defense roles.
