Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm : RWE wraps up onshore construction works
RWE Renewables has wrapped up the construction of all the key onshore electrical system works for the 857MW Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm in the UK.
The latest milestone follows the installation of the last turbine of the offshore wind farm in September.
The construction for the onshore electrical system works of the Triton Knoll wind farm began in September 2018, which included laying a 220kV underground cable for 57km from the landfall location of the offshore wind project near Anderby Creek to the recently built Triton Knoll Onshore Substation near Bicker Fen.
Additionally, a 1.8km of 400kV cable was installed to enable connection into the UK national grid at the existing National Grid Bicker Fen Substation.
RWE Renewables had achieved first electricity from the Triton Knoll Offshore Wind Farm in February 2021.
Julian Garnsey — Project Director for RWE and Triton Knoll said: “We have worked closely with all our supply chain to ensure that construction progressed safely and efficiently, even during the Coronavirus pandemic. We’d like to thank everyone involved for their dedication to ensuring the safety of all whilst building this nationally significant infrastructure project.”
The construction of both the onshore and offshore substations as well as the installation of the 400kV cabling was carried out by Siemens Energy.
Phil Manley — project director for Siemens Energy said: “As a responsible contractor, it has been important to us that the only mark we leave on the landscape is the state-of-the-art substation which will feed the clean electricity generated offshore to the thousands of homes and businesses in the area.
“We are delighted this work is now complete and the wind farm takes a step towards completion.”
J Murphy & Sons, a construction and engineering company, installed the 57km onshore cable.
Apart from Triton Knoll, RWE is currently working on the construction of the 1.4GW Sofia Offshore Wind Farm. The renewable energy company is also going forward with four extension projects in Britain with a total potential installed capacity of nearly 2.6GW.
Additionally, the company has bagged The Crown Estate’s Offshore Wind Round 4 Leasing auction bids for two new adjacent offshore sites on Dogger Bank, with a total installed capacity of possibly 3GW.
