Special diet is the major treatment in the case of peptic ulcer. The peptic ulcer may be located in the stomach (gastric ulcer) or small intestine (duodenal ulcer). The special diet is required to neutralize the acidity of the gastric juice. The persons suffering with peptic ulcers should take protein rich foods like eggs and milk.

What are the foods to be avoided?

  • Foods which irritate an ulcer chemically should be avoided
  • Excessive sweets should be avoided
  • Spices should not be consumed
  • Low salt diet should be taken
  • Foods with sharp seeds should be avoided
  • Foods containing tough skins should not be taken
  • Excessive hot and cold foods should be avoided
  • Coffee, tea, carbonated beverages and alcohol should be avoided
  • Gravies should be prevented
The above foods promote gastric secretion, hence they are to be avoided. Foods containing the above components are known as bland diet. One has to avoid bland diet and consume the soft diet.
Soft diet is recommended for people suffering with gastrointestinal disturbances and who are facing the difficulty in chewing.
