Tragic school bus crash on Texas highway results in two fatalities
In a sorrowful incident on a Texas highway, a significant collision involving a school bus carrying prekindergarten students, a concrete truck, and a passenger vehicle resulted in the loss of at least two lives, including that of a student. The crash, described as a “major traffic event” by the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office, unfolded on State Highway 21 West at Caldwell Road early Friday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the local community and beyond.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) spokesperson Deon Cockrell, the fatalities included a male student aboard the bus and the driver of a Dodge Charger. The catastrophic sequence of events began when a concrete truck, traveling in the opposite direction, veered into the lane of the westbound school bus. The impact was severe, with the concrete truck striking the bus head-on, causing it to overturn onto its side.
The passenger vehicle caught in the crash was trailing the bus at the time of the incident. First responders evaluated fifty-three individuals at the scene, as reported by Austin-Travis County EMS Division Chief Kevin Parker. Four of those assessed were airlifted in critical condition, and six others were transported via ground with potentially serious injuries. The condition and specific vehicle of the critically injured were not immediately disclosed.
The school bus was carrying students from Tom Green Elementary School in Hays County, part of the Hays Consolidated Independent School District. The young passengers were returning from a field trip to the Bastrop Zoo when the tragedy struck. The school district confirmed that fifty-five individuals, including forty-four students and eleven adults, were on the bus when the accident occurred.
