, in line with its commitment to achieving near-zero by 2030, has announced a significant expansion in its monitoring and reduction strategies. The company will deploy continuous, real-time methane detection equipment across all its operated upstream sites, setting a new benchmark in the energy sector’s fight against climate change.

Achieving ambitious methane reduction goals ahead of schedule

The French energy major has been actively pursuing methane reduction targets since 2022. Originally aiming for a 50% reduction in methane emissions by 2025, TotalEnergies is set to reach this milestone by 2024—ahead of schedule. By 2030, the company is on track to achieve an 80% reduction in emissions compared to 2020 levels.

This progress is credited to a range of innovative initiatives, including the successful deployment of AUSEA (Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications) drones, which have been instrumental in identifying and quantifying methane leaks.

Pioneering continuous real-time monitoring

Building on its existing detection technologies, TotalEnergies will implement continuous methane monitoring equipment on all operated upstream assets. This initiative involves real-time detection systems designed to identify both fugitive and stationary methane emissions. The technology allows for immediate corrective action, minimizing environmental impact and reducing the company’s overall emissions footprint.

The deployment will feature a mix of IoT sensors, infrared cameras, flowmeters, and predictive emissions monitoring systems. The rollout is set for completion by the end of 2025 and will cover not only existing facilities but also projects under development, such as the in Suriname.

Industry leadership in climate action

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, emphasized the importance of methane reduction as a short-term climate priority. He noted that continuous real-time monitoring equips operators to address emissions and leaks more effectively, aligning with the company’s commitment as a signatory of the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC). Pouyanné added that TotalEnergies’ large-scale deployment of this technology exemplifies its leadership in promoting industry-wide best practices.
