Tata Motors and Tata Power join forces for 12MWp solar project in Pune

Tata Motors has partnered with Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) to ink a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 12MWp on-site solar project at Tata Motors’ Pune commercial vehicle manufacturing facility. This collaboration aligns with the Tata Group’s vision for environmental sustainability and green manufacturing practices. The 12MWp solar project, which adds to Tata Motors’ existing 8.73MWp in Pune, is expected to be commissioned within six months after the PPA is signed.

Solar Project to Generate 17.5 Million Units of Electricity Annually

The new solar installation is anticipated to churn out 17.5 million units of electricity every year. This output will account for nearly 17.2% of Tata Motors’ annualized electricity requirements at its Pune facility. Additionally, the project is projected to reduce carbon emissions by over 12,400 tonnes/kWh per annum. The upcoming project will feature rooftop installations and plays a vital role in Tata Motors’ long-term sustainability goals.

Vishal Badshah, Vice President of Commercial Vehicle Operations at Tata Motors, emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability. “Tata Motors is committed to achieving net-zero emissions. This solar facility in Pune is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to transition to renewable energy sources,” he said. Ashish Khanna, CEO of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, mirrored this sentiment, stating that the 12MWp PPA is a critical step toward shared sustainability goals between Tata Power and Tata Motors.

Tata’s Prior Collaborations and Future Plans for Renewable Energy

This is not the first time Tata Motors and Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited have joined forces for renewable energy projects. They have previously collaborated on a 16MWp solar power initiative in Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, which is slated to be the state’s largest in terms of capacity. Tata Motors plans to expand the solar capacity at its Pune plant in the coming years to meet the growing demand for renewable energy.
