Tata Motors accelerates electric future with JLR’s advanced EMA platform for Avinya series

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM), a fully-owned subsidiary of Tata Motors Limited (TML), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Jaguar Land Rover Plc (JLR) for access to JLR’s Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform. This strategic collaboration involves a licensing deal that will propel TPEM’s development of their premium ‘Avinya’ pure electric vehicles series, marking a significant foray into the electric vehicle (EV) market.

Under the terms of the MoU, TPEM will leverage JLR’s EMA platform — an advanced foundation designed for mid-sized ‘pure electric’ SUVs set to launch internationally from 2025. The platform boasts optimal design for native battery electric vehicles (BEVs), enhancing interior space, comfort, and incorporating high-end electrical and electronic (E&E) architecture, with over-the-air software capabilities. It also features an integrated propulsion system that promises to deliver exceptional vehicle efficiency and range.

The ‘Avinya’ concept, which embodies TPEM’s commitment to innovation in electric mobility, will benefit from the alliance with JLR in terms of technology, software, and AI to compete on a global scale. Anand Kulkarni, Chief Product Officer at TPEM, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, “Avinya will spawn a new breed of world-class EVs, with global standards in efficiency and range. We are delighted to collaborate on the EMA platform with JLR for actualizing this vision.”

Thomas Mueller of JLR echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the collaboration’s role in bolstering TPEM’s electrification journey. The adoption of the EMA platform not only expedites TPEM’s entry into the upscale EV market but also aligns with advancements in autonomy, connectivity, and ultrafast charging technologies.

Furthermore, the partnership is expected to generate over 200 new jobs in the UK and represents a deepened level of cooperation within the Tata Group. This deal comes on the heels of the successful development of Tata’s Harrier and Safari vehicles, which were based on JLR’s D8 platform.
