Freeport-McMoRan has approved a $4.5 billion expansion of its Bagdad copper and molybdenum mine in Arizona, targeting more than 400 million pounds of annual copper production after completion. The project could substantially increase domestic output and lower unit costs, but a multiyear construction programme and commodity-price exposure will determine its financial returns.
