Japan launched a National Disaster Management Agency on 2 November 2026 to strengthen preparedness, emergency coordination and reconstruction. The move comes amid concerns about the country's exposure to major earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions, including government scenarios estimating that a Nankai Trough megaquake could cause as many as 298,000 deaths.
