Syrah Resources launches first commercial-scale AAM production outside China
Syrah Resources Limited (ASX:SYR) has announced a development in the renewable energy landscape, commencing production of Active Anode Material (AAM) at its Vidalia facility in Louisiana, USA. This achievement positions Syrah as the first commercial-scale, vertically integrated natural graphite AAM supplier outside China, heralding a new era in the battery supply chain for North American and global markets.
The Vidalia facility, with an annual production capacity of 11.25ktpa AAM, represents the culmination of nearly seven years of relentless effort in technology development, feasibility studies, and construction. This strategic initiative underscores Syrah’s commitment to enhancing the electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain through the provision of high-quality, sustainable natural graphite.
Syrah Managing Director and CEO Shaun Verner praised the company’s progress, stating, “Commencing production at Vidalia is a huge step forward in Syrah’s evolution.” The project has not only achieved a significant technical milestone but has also garnered substantial support from local, state, and federal authorities, reflecting the project’s importance in promoting sustainable energy solutions.

The Vidalia AAM operation is pivotal for both Syrah and the North American battery supply chain, responding to the increasing demand for EVs and the critical need for independent natural graphite supply. The facility’s strategic significance is further amplified by recent global shifts, including China’s introduction of export controls on graphite and US guidance on foreign entities of concern, highlighting the importance of secure, sustainable supply chains.
With the commencement of AAM production, Syrah’s focus now shifts towards ramping up operations to achieve the design capacity of 11.25ktpa, targeting significant output within the next 18 months. The company is also progressing towards expanding the Vidalia facility’s production capacity to 45ktpa AAM, in anticipation of a final investment decision.
This expansion aligns with Syrah’s vision to provide a unique value proposition in the renewable energy market, emphasizing scale, independence, and ESG auditability. The Vidalia AAM product, utilizing Balama natural graphite, is poised to play a crucial role in meeting the critical minerals requirement for the Section 30D clean vehicle credit under the Inflation Reduction Act.
