South Jersey Industries and OPAL Fuels launch major RNG project in New Jersey
South Jersey Industries (SJI), a prominent energy infrastructure holding company, and OPAL Fuels Inc., a leading player in biogas-to-renewable natural gas (RNG) technologies, have announced the initiation of construction on a new RNG production facility at the Burlington County Resource Recovery Complex in Florence Township, New Jersey. This development marks the second collaborative effort between the two firms to construct, own, and operate RNG facilities, further solidifying their commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
State-of-the-Art Facility to Combat Greenhouse Gases
The new facility, with an annual design capacity of approximately 0.92 million MMBtus, represents a significant investment in renewable energy technology. Utilizing advanced and proven biogas capture technology, the plant will transform methane—produced naturally from the decomposition of organic waste at the landfill—into RNG. This process will enable the production of about 6.5 million gas gallons equivalent (GGE) of RNG per year.
OPAL Fuels will distribute this RNG through its comprehensive network of fueling stations, primarily targeting heavy-duty trucks. This distribution strategy aims to lower emissions from these vehicles and reduce operational fuel costs for fleet operators. The RNG produced is expected to substantially diminish methane emissions from the landfill, thereby contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gases.
Environmental Impact and Carbon Reduction
The environmental benefits of this project are significant. The RNG facility is projected to displace over 530,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually. This reduction is crucial in the fight against climate change, addressing both methane emissions from landfills and fossil fuel usage in transportation. The project is poised to tackle two major greenhouse gases: methane—a potent short-term climate pollutant—and CO2 emissions associated with conventional fuels.
Strategic Partnership and Growth
Jonathan Maurer, co-CEO of OPAL Fuels, praised the partnership with South Jersey Industries, highlighting that the Burlington RNG facility is a strategic addition to their growing portfolio of RNG projects. He emphasized the facility’s role in advancing renewable energy production in New Jersey and supporting the state’s transition to a low-carbon economy. The partnership reflects OPAL Fuels’ broader strategy to enhance its RNG portfolio, leveraging proven technologies to deliver value to landfill operators and address climate challenges.
Mike Renna, President and CEO of South Jersey Industries, echoed this sentiment, expressing pride in the collaboration with OPAL Fuels. Renna underscored SJI’s ongoing commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions and noted that the project aligns with the company’s broader goals of enhancing environmental stewardship and supporting the transition to a cleaner energy landscape.
Technological and Economic Benefits
The RNG facility at Burlington County is expected to deliver not only environmental benefits but also economic advantages. The use of RNG as a fuel source can significantly reduce the cost of fuel for heavy-duty trucks compared to conventional diesel, offering a cost-effective solution for fleet operators. Additionally, the facility will create local jobs during construction and operational phases, contributing to the regional economy.
As the facility progresses, it will serve as a model for future RNG projects, demonstrating the viability and benefits of converting biogas into renewable energy. The project highlights the growing importance of RNG in the energy landscape and the role of strategic partnerships in advancing sustainable technologies.
The collaboration between South Jersey Industries and OPAL Fuels on the Burlington RNG facility underscores a pivotal moment in the evolution of renewable energy projects. By combining their expertise and resources, the two companies are setting a benchmark in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing renewable energy solutions. The successful completion of this project will not only enhance New Jersey’s energy sustainability but also contribute significantly to the broader fight against climate change.
