Smucker’s recalls certain 9Lives canned cat food lots in US

The J.M. Smucker Company (Smucker’s) has issued a voluntary recall of certain lots of 9Lives Protein Plus wet, canned cat food in the US, because of the products possibly containing possible low levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1).

The company said that no illnesses connected to the issue have been reported as of now. Smucker’s said that the recall of the 9Lives Protein Plus wet lots is being done an abundance of caution.

The recalled canned cat food products from Smucker’s are:

No other 9Lives products or products of company are affected by the recall, which is being carried out in cooperation with the US Food and Drug Administration.

According to Smucker’s, cats that are subjected to diets low in thiamine for a number of weeks may be prone for developing a deficiency of the vitamin B₁, which is  essential for the animal.

Symptoms of thiamine deficiency shown by an affected cat could be neurological or gastrointestinal in nature.

Initial signs of the deficiency could be low appetite, salivation, vomiting, and also weight loss. Neurological signs can develop in advanced cases, which include bending towards the floor of the neck, circling, wobbly walking, falling, and even seizures.

Smucker’s said that pet parents who have the recalled canned cat food product should stop feeding it to their cats and throw it away.
