SKF unveils first bearings designed for circular performance

SKF has redefined industrial sustainability with the introduction of SKF Infinium bearings, the first bearing series purpose-built for circular performance. These innovative bearings, crafted using advanced Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) technology, can be remanufactured and reclad indefinitely, marking a new era in additive manufacturing and circular economy principles.

Revolutionising bearing technology for circularity

SKF Infinium bearings are engineered to maximise performance and longevity while reducing environmental impact. By using LMD technology, the company has developed a multi-material design that allows damaged sections to be removed and replaced with new material directly applied to the bearing ring. This process extends the product’s lifecycle, significantly lowering waste and reducing the total cost of ownership for industrial users.

Thomas Fröst, President of SKF’s Independent and Emerging Business, explained that the new design aligns with the company’s commitment to clean and intelligent manufacturing strategies. He emphasised that the SKF Infinium series exemplifies the potential for innovation to reduce resource consumption while delivering superior performance.

Fröst described the bearings as a pivotal step toward a circular business model, aimed at keeping products in use for as long as possible. He noted that this design, the first of its kind, has the potential to revolutionise how industrial bearings are utilised.

One of the standout features of SKF Infinium bearings is their adaptability. They can be customised with various materials to meet specific industrial needs. For example, a standard bearing reclad with a stainless-steel alloy gains corrosion resistance comparable to a fully solid stainless-steel bearing but at a significantly reduced cost. This capability positions the Infinium series as a versatile and cost-effective solution for industries with demanding applications.
