Chinese and Iranian Hackers Among the Culprits
OpenAI’s latest report pinpoints threat actors from China and Iran among those abusing ChatGPT’s capabilities. Notably, a Chinese cyber-espionage group, dubbed ‘SweetSpecter’ and previously documented by Cisco Talos, targeted Asian governments before shifting their focus directly to OpenAI. SweetSpecter allegedly used phishing emails disguised as support requests to deliver the SugarGh0st Remote Access Trojan (RAT) to OpenAI employees, utilizing ChatGPT to conduct vulnerability analysis and scripting.
An Iranian group linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), known as ‘CyberAv3ngers,’ reportedly exploited ChatGPT to develop tools targeting Western industrial infrastructure. OpenAI identified ChatGPT’s use to generate default credentials for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), create obfuscated scripts, and assist with post-compromise operations.
Storm-0817: Debugging and Building Android Malware
The report also highlighted ‘Storm-0817,’ an Iranian cyber group that used ChatGPT to debug malware, scrape Instagram, translate LinkedIn profiles, and even develop bespoke Android malware. This malware aimed to steal personal information, such as contacts, call logs, browsing history, and geolocation data. Their operations used a WAMP-based command and control server, leveraging the domain stickhero[.]pro for communication.
Threat Mitigation Measures by OpenAI
In response, OpenAI has banned the accounts involved in these operations and collaborated with cybersecurity partners to share indicators of compromise, including IP addresses, to help contain future threats. While these activities do not represent new techniques for malware development, they underscore how AI tools like ChatGPT can make cyber operations more accessible and efficient, particularly for less experienced attackers.
