Search for Sudiksha Konanki intensifies as authorities expand investigation
Authorities in the Dominican Republic have intensified their search for missing University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki, whose disappearance during a spring break trip to Punta Cana remains under investigation. The 20-year-old, a legal U.S. resident and Indian citizen, was last seen early Thursday morning after going for a swim.
According to law enforcement sources, Konanki’s clothes were found on a portable beach bed near the shoreline where she was last seen. Officials have yet to uncover any evidence of foul play, but investigators are treating the case as a probable drowning.
Konanki had traveled to the Dominican Republic with a group of friends from Loudoun County, Virginia, where she resided. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that at least one other individual from her group was also a county resident.
Last Known Moments: Security Footage and Witness Accounts
Investigative reports indicate that Konanki and her companions had been at a nightclub on Wednesday night before heading to the beach at around 4:00 a.m. local time. Security footage reportedly captured other members of her group returning to their hotel rooms around 5:55 a.m., while Konanki remained behind with an unidentified male.
According to Dominican Republic police reports, the man stated that he and Konanki went for a swim and were caught in a strong wave. He later told authorities that after making it back to shore, he vomited and fell asleep on a beach bed. When he woke up, Konanki was gone.
Surveillance footage allegedly shows the man returning to his hotel room at approximately 9:55 a.m. Law enforcement officials have confirmed that he is not currently considered a suspect, and the case remains classified as an accident.
Authorities Expand Search Operations
As the investigation continues, Dominican authorities have expanded their search along the coastline, focusing on beaches and ocean waters where Konanki may have been swept away. Officials from the Dominican Republic Civil Defense have stated that all available resources are being utilized in the search.
The Dominican Republic Public Ministry confirmed that the U.S. embassy first reached out regarding the case on Friday. Local law enforcement has questioned Konanki’s travel companions, though no charges have been filed against anyone in the group.
Growing Concerns Over Tourist Safety
Konanki’s disappearance has raised concerns about tourist safety in Punta Cana, a destination known for its bustling resorts and nightlife. Past incidents involving missing tourists in the region have prompted calls for increased security measures, particularly in areas frequented by international visitors.
The case has also gained significant attention on social media, with calls for transparency in the investigation. As authorities continue their efforts, the search for Sudiksha Konanki remains ongoing, with officials hoping for a breakthrough in the coming days.
