Saint John Energy (SJE), a prominent Canadian municipal utility, has entered into a strategic multi-year partnership with Kraken Technologies, a leading provider of utility software-as-a-service solutions. This collaboration marks Kraken’s first integrated partnership in the North American energy market, setting a significant milestone for both entities.

Partnership Details and Objectives

Under this partnership, SJE will license Kraken’s advanced demand flexibility solution and its comprehensive customer service platform. This move is aimed at continuing SJE’s legacy of pioneering innovation in the energy sector by utilizing Kraken’s solutions to enhance customer value and support a decentralized, decarbonized grid.

Kraken Technologies, a subsidiary of Octopus Energy Group, will incorporate all of SJE’s residential and business customers onto its all-encompassing platform. This platform covers customer service, billing, optimization, and asset management, promising a significant upgrade in how energy services are delivered and managed.

Innovative Energy Solutions

SJE has been at the forefront of the energy transition in North America. Notably, more than 75% of its customers use electric heating, with a substantial number also adopting other energy-efficient installations like rented water heaters and heat pumps. In 2019, SJE was the world’s first utility to deploy a Tesla Megapack, significantly cutting greenhouse gas emissions and reducing grid strain.

With Kraken’s end-to-end management platform, SJE is well-equipped to meet the evolving energy needs of Saint John residents, especially as new renewable generation and consumer low-carbon technologies emerge.
