Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. has announced the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Platform, marking a significant advancement in spatial computing.
The platform delivers 4.3K resolution at 90 frames per second, enhancing visual clarity for both work and play in virtual and mixed reality (VR and MR) environments.
The ‘+’ version of Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 offers increased GPU and CPU frequencies, enabling more realistic and detailed experiences.
Building upon its predecessor, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, the ‘+’ variant of the chipset enhances the capabilities of MR and VR devices. It achieves this with a 15% increase in GPU frequency and a 20% boost in CPU frequency, facilitating a new tier of lifelike, detailed experiences in virtual environments.
The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 stands out for its ability to support 12 or more concurrent cameras. This feature, combined with powerful on-device AI, allows for seamless tracking of the user and their surroundings. This integration enhances navigation and creates unparalleled experiences that blur the line between physical and digital spaces.
Hugo Swart, VP and GM of XR at Qualcomm Technologies, emphasized the platform’s impact: “Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 unlocks 4.3K resolution which will take XR productivity and entertainment to the next level by bringing spectacularly clear visuals to use cases such as room-scale screens, life-size overlays, and virtual desktops.”
Inkang Song, VP and Head of Technology Strategy Team at Samsung Electronics, expressed excitement about collaborating with Qualcomm and Google, aiming to deliver best-in-class XR experiences for Galaxy users.
Shahram Izadi, VP of AR at Google, also highlighted the ongoing collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung, focusing on the future of immersive and spatial XR.
Additionally, Qualcomm Technologies unveiled a new MR & VR reference design developed by Goertek. This design features eye-tracking technology from Tobii and supports both 3K per eye (Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2) and 4K per eye (Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2) configurations, aiding OEMs in accelerating time to market for new devices.
The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Platform represents Qualcomm Technologies’ commitment to pushing the boundaries of XR technology. This innovation is set to revolutionize the field of spatial computing, offering unprecedented clarity and realism in VR and MR experiences.
