Petrobras extends FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis charter in Tupi field until 2030

TAGS

Petrobras, in collaboration with the Tupi field consortium, has announced a critical extension to the charter and service contracts for the FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis, stationed in Brazil’s vast Santos Basin. This move will keep the FPSO operational until 2030, a decision reflecting the consortium’s commitment to maintaining and expanding production in one of the world’s most prolific offshore oil regions. The initiative includes vital upgrades designed to enhance production efficiency, ensure operational safety, and align with global sustainability goals.

Why Is Petrobras Extending the FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis Charter?

The FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis is a cornerstone of oil and gas production in Brazil’s pre-salt Santos Basin. Since its deployment in October 2010, this floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel has processed up to 100,000 barrels of oil per day and 177 million standard cubic feet of daily, with a storage capacity of 1.6 million barrels of oil. Its role in the Tupi field’s output has been pivotal to sustaining Brazil’s energy sector.

The decision to extend the FPSO’s charter term by an additional five years aligns with Petrobras’ 2025-2029 Business Plan, which prioritizes innovation, operational resilience, and environmental stewardship. By 2030, Petrobras expects to decommission the vessel, concluding two decades of service that have shaped the region’s landscape.

What Upgrades Will Improve the FPSO’s Performance?

Petrobras and its partners have outlined significant technical enhancements to the FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis. These upgrades aim to bolster its reliability, ensure platform integrity, and reduce operational emissions.

The vessel operates with a spread mooring system designed by SOFEC, which features 24 chain-polyester mooring lines in a 4×6 configuration. This system ensures stability against extreme conditions, such as 11.11-metre significant wave heights (36.5 feet) and wind speeds of 34 metres per second (66 knots). These engineering updates will further secure the FPSO’s ability to perform under challenging offshore conditions, ensuring uninterrupted production.

In addition to hardware improvements, Petrobras is integrating measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These measures align with global energy transition goals and strengthen Petrobras’ efforts to minimize its environmental impact while maximizing production efficiency.

What Does This Mean for the Tupi Field Consortium?

The Tupi field consortium, led by Petrobras with a 67.216% stake, also includes (23.024%), (9.209%), and PPSA (0.551%). For the consortium, extending the FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis’ operational life ensures the continuation of vital production levels in the Tupi field, which remains one of Brazil’s largest offshore reserves.

The FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis initially gathered oil and gas from five subsea wells. With the capacity to support four additional production wells in the future, the extended charter will help Petrobras and its partners maximize resource recovery from the field’s abundant pre-salt reserves.

The vessel’s current water depth of 2,140 metres (7,037 feet) underscores the complexity of Brazil’s offshore exploration efforts, showcasing Petrobras’ leadership in deepwater production technologies.

How Does This Extension Align with Petrobras’ Long-Term Vision?

Petrobras’ decision to extend the charter term and modernize the FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis reflects its strategic commitment to balancing operational efficiency with environmental responsibility. These upgrades are a part of the company’s broader objective to innovate within the offshore oil sector while addressing global calls for reduced carbon emissions.

As the first high-capacity FPSO to operate in Brazil’s pre-salt reserves, the Cidade de Angra dos Reis has been a key player in consolidating the Santos Basin as a global energy hub. Its continued operation through 2030 ensures Petrobras and its partners can capitalize on this vital resource while implementing sustainable practices.

A Legacy in Offshore Exploration

The FPSO Cidade de Angra dos Reis has become a symbol of Petrobras’ innovation and dominance in offshore exploration. Its ability to withstand harsh conditions, process massive oil volumes, and store significant quantities of crude oil has made it indispensable to the Tupi field.

The planned upgrades reflect Petrobras’ ambition to remain competitive in the global energy market while adhering to the highest environmental and operational standards. As the vessel approaches its decommissioning in 2030, it will leave behind a legacy of pioneering technology and strategic production that has defined Brazil’s energy sector for nearly two decades.
