NTPC partners with Numaligarh Refinery for bamboo-based bio-refinery and green initiatives
In a landmark move to bolster India’s green energy sector and advance towards net-zero emissions, NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power utility, has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL). This collaboration is poised to explore partnership opportunities in establishing a bamboo-based Bio-Refinery at NTPC Bongaigaon, among other green projects. NRL, a subsidiary of Oil India Limited, is known for its refining and marketing prowess in the petroleum sector.
Signed on January 30, 2024, this strategic MoU underscores the shared commitment of these Central Public Sector Enterprises to fostering sustainable solutions and expanding their footprint in green chemicals. The ceremony saw the presence of key figures, including Gurdeep Singh, CMD of NTPC; Dr. Ranjit Rath, CMD of OIL and Chairman of NRL; and Bhaskar Jyoti Phukan, MD of NRL, marking a significant step forward in the development of the North Eastern Region and achieving the nation’s ambitious Net-Zero targets.
NTPC’s dedication to the environment is evident in its commitment to achieving 60 GW of Renewable Energy capacity by 2032, alongside becoming a major player in the Green Hydrogen and Energy Storage domain. The company has embarked on various decarbonization initiatives, including the development of Green Hydrogen, Biofuels, Carbon Capture, and Hydrogen Mobility solutions. This partnership with NRL not only aligns with NTPC’s vision for a sustainable future but also leverages NRL’s expertise in refining technologies to innovate in the realm of biofuels and green chemicals.
