Nouryon, Atul JV begins production of monochloroacetic acid at Anaven joint venture
Nouryon, a Dutch specialty chemicals company, and Atul Ltd, an Indian chemicals company, have commenced production of monochloroacetic acid (MCA) at Anaven, their new joint venture (JV) in Gujarat.
The production is expected to address the increasing demands of agricultural, pharmaceutical, and personal care markets.
Anaven has a capacity of manufacturing 32,000 tons per year of monochloroacetic acid, which can be expanded to 60,000 tons per year.
MCA is an important raw material in different types of products like adhesives, crop protection chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Atul uses MCA directly in its own production of crop protection chemicals.
Rob Vancko – Vice President of Construction at Nouryon and Chairman of Anaven, said: “Through this partnership with Atul, we can leverage Nouryon’s global leadership in MCA in order to meet the fast-growing demand from customers across multiple markets in India, while also continuing to drive innovation and sustainability in the region.”
Nouryon said that it had applied its expertise to construct a facility that uses eco-friendly hydrogentation technology and follows latest sustainability innovations for less energy consumption and received a Silver Medal recently by EcoVadis.
The Anaven plant is said to be a zero-liquid discharge MCA production unit, which means there is no wastewater discharged by it.
Sunil Lalbhai – Chairman and Managing Director of Atul said: “Thanks to our partnership, we can apply Nouryon’s state-of-the art technology in the new plant while creating forward and backward integration with our bulk and agri-chemicals businesses. The Anaven plant will ensure a reliable supply of a key raw material for the Indian market, giving a growing number of farmers, doctors and households better access to daily essentials.”
Nouryon, which has monochloroacetic acid plants in the Netherlands, China, and Japan, also has an organic peroxide and metal alkyls production site in Mahad, India.
