NHPC, India’s leading hydropower company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gujarat Power Corporation Limited, Government of Gujarat, for the proposed 750 MW Kuppa Pumped Hydro Storage Project.
Situated in Chhota Udaipur, Gujarat, the project involves an estimated investment of Rs. 4000 crores by NHPC.
The initiative aligns with India’s national objective of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and the “Net Zero” target by 2070.
The Kuppa Pumped Hydro Storage Project is a significant step towards clean and green energy in India. By utilizing pumped hydro storage technology, the project aims to offer a sustainable solution for energy storage, enhancing the stability of the power grid. The implementation of this project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities, contributing to the local economy’s growth.
The MoU signing ceremony, held at the Secretariat in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, under the “Vibrant Gujarat” initiative, signifies a collaborative effort in sustainable energy development. The agreement was signed by Managing Director of GPCL, Arun Mahesh Babu, and NHPC’s Executive Director of Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen, V.R. Srivastava, in the presence of the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, and Energy Minister, Kanubhai Desai.
NHPC Limited, with its extensive experience in hydropower, plays a crucial role in India’s transition to renewable energy. The company, which operates 25 power stations with a total installed capacity of 7,097.2 MW, including wind and solar energy, is currently engaged in constructing 15 projects with an aggregate installed capacity of 10,449 MW.
The collaboration between NHPC and Gujarat Power Corporation on the Kuppa Pumped Hydro Storage Project represents a pivotal advancement in renewable energy in India.
