Mountain Valley Pipeline commences operation: A new era in energy supply

The Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP), a major U.S. infrastructure project, has officially commenced operations after meeting all necessary legal and regulatory requirements. This development marks a significant milestone for the energy sector, particularly in the provision of natural gas, which is considered an affordable and cleaner alternative to coal. The pipeline, running approximately 303 miles across West Virginia and Virginia, is now set to deliver natural gas from the Marcellus and Utica shale regions to the mid-Atlantic and Southeast United States.

The MVP is designed to transport up to 2 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas per day, directly addressing the energy needs of local distribution companies, industrial users, and power generation facilities. The pipeline’s operation will commence with interruptible or short-term firm transportation service, with long-term firm capacity obligations starting July 1, 2024.

The project’s initiation follows comprehensive evaluations and approvals by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. Throughout its development, the MVP has adhered to stringent environmental standards, including measures to protect endangered species and other environmental resources.
