Micron to invest $100bn in new semiconductor fabrication facility in Clay

Micron Technology, an American manufacturer of memory, has announced plans to invest up to $100 billion to build a mega semiconductor fabrication facility in Clay, New York.

The investment in the new megafab will be made over the next 20 years. It is said to become the largest semiconductor fabrication facility in the history of the US.

Micron Technology will make an initial investment of $20 billion in the semiconductor manufacturing project, which will increase domestic supply of leading-edge memory, by the end of this decade.

The new megafab in Clay is expected to create nearly 50,000 New York jobs, including approximately 9,000 high paying jobs with the American semiconductor manufacturing company.

Site preparation on the new semiconductor factory in Clay will commence in 2023, with an anticipated start of construction in 2024.

The site is expected to consist of four 600,000 square foot cleanrooms, for a total of 2.4 million square feet of cleanroom space. It will be 100% powered by renewable energy.

The New York megafab is part of Micron Technology’s strategy to gradually increase its DRAM production in the US to 40% of its global output over the next decade.

The new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Clay is expected to complement the company’s previously announced high-volume chip manufacturing fab in Boise, Idaho.
