LG Energy Solution partners with Analog Devices to enhance battery management technologies
LG Energy Solution (KRX: 373220) has entered a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), a leader in the semiconductor industry, to advance its battery management solutions. This collaboration will span two years, focusing on the co-development of state-of-the-art algorithms and the integration of high-performance battery management integrated circuits (BMIC) from ADI.
Enhancing Battery Management for Electric Vehicles
– Partnership Focus: Development of advanced fast-charging technologies for EV batteries.
– Technology Integration: ADI to supply cutting-edge BMICs; joint development of algorithms to measure internal battery cell temperatures accurately.
This initiative aims to overcome current limitations in battery management systems (BMS), which traditionally use external temperature sensors that cannot precisely measure internal conditions. By leveraging Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), this partnership will enable more accurate assessments of battery state, health, and temperature, potentially transforming the fast-charging capabilities of EV batteries.
Innovation in Battery Technology
Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) stands out as a sophisticated technology used to measure the impedance of battery cells across various frequencies. This measurement is crucial as impedance fluctuates with the battery’s age, state, and temperature. The new EIS solutions from ADI will allow for precise internal temperature estimations without separate devices, paving the way for enhanced battery performance and longevity.
“The joint effort with ADI, which has an innovative BMIC portfolio, will further strengthen the capabilities of LG Energy Solution’s battery management solution,” said Dalhoon Lee, Vice President and head of the BMS R&D Center at LG Energy Solution. He emphasized the potential to deliver differentiated value to customers through enhanced technological capabilities.
Roger Keen, General Manager, Battery Management at ADI, highlighted the significance of their EIS technology in the industry, noting, “Our joint effort with LG Energy Solution furthers the contribution ADI has been bringing to the energy transition. We are enthusiastic to keep working together with LG Energy Solution to bring state-of-the-art and efficient batteries to the market, and to further advance the clean energy ecosystem.”
Future Prospects and Industry Impact
The collaboration between LG Energy Solution and ADI is set to mark a significant milestone in the application of real-time impedance measurement for analyzing internal statuses of EV batteries. This could lead to breakthroughs in how electric vehicle batteries are managed and charged, contributing to the broader goals of enhancing energy efficiency and promoting sustainable energy solutions.
