Khiron Life Sciences, a Canadian cannabis producer, has begun the construction on a new medical cannabis production plant in Uruguay, thereby expanding multi-jurisdiction and export capacity.
The new cannabis cultivation and processing facility is located in Juan Lacaze.
The medical cannabis production plant with a production capacity of 17 tons per year will increase Khiron Life Sciences’ total production capacity and strengthen its capabilities to export and supply medical cannabis across the Mercosur trading bloc, with access to Brazil and Europe.
The medical cannabis plant will include a GAP-compliant 8,000 m2 of covered area for optimum crop cultivation and a GMP-compliant 1,800 m2 processing plant for drying and processing crops, said the Canadian cannabis producer.

Alvaro Torres – CEO and director of Khiron Life Sciences, commenting on the new medical cannabis production plant in Uruguay, said: “With construction of our facility in Juan Lacaze, we are actively executing on our strategy to build a dominant position in Latin America and further expand our global reach.
“Through its inclusion in the Mercosur trade bloc, Uruguay is poised to become a key source to supply the global medical cannabis industry.
“Our production in the country will target domestic use in Uruguay and export across one of the world’s largest trading blocs, beginning with export to Brazil, home to 208 million people, and from there, we expect to move quickly across the bloc’s trading countries in Latin America.”
The Canadian cannabis producer said that construction on the medical cannabis production plant is scheduled for completion in mid Q3 2020.
Khiron Life Sciences recently acquired NettaGrowth International and its wholly-owned subsidiary Dormul, an Uruguayan company that obtained the first licence for medical cannabis production and export with tetrahydrocannabinol for commercialization in Uruguay.
Uruguay has established cannabis legislation, thereby becoming the first country in the world to do so.
