IISc, Indegene, and Ignite LSF collaborate to combat cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases
Indian Institute of Science (IISc), India’s premier institute for advanced scientific research, together with Ignite Life Science Foundation (LSF) and Indegene, a life sciences commercialization company, have announced a significant collaboration aimed at advancing scientific discoveries in India. This partnership focuses on enhancing research capabilities to prevent and treat cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
Enhanced Research Capabilities and Innovations
The collaboration has equipped IISc with a new multi-mode plate reader that features absorbance, fluorescence, and luminescence capabilities, crucial for laboratory experiments in this domain. Professor G. Mugesh from IISc expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are excited to collaborate with Indegene and Ignite and appreciate their support. This is a great step forward in advancing scientific discoveries in India and paves the way for accelerating scientific innovation in the coming days.”
Focus on Neurodegenerative and Cardiovascular Diseases
The project led by Professor Mugesh at IISc focuses on developing “Small Molecule GPX Mimetics for the Prevention of Cardiovascular and Neurodegenerative Diseases.” This research is critical as neurodegenerative diseases are projected by the World Health Organization (WHO) to become the second leading cause of death worldwide by 2040. The lab’s work on inhibiting ferroptosis—a form of cell death linked to various neurodegenerative conditions—offers a promising avenue for therapeutic development.
Commitment to Future-Ready Healthcare
Dr. T. S. Balganesh, a member of Ignite’s Scientific Advisory Board, highlighted the importance of the multi-plate reader, stating, “The multi-plate reader will increase throughput and accelerate experiments. Rich biological data can drive the generation of new insights and open up fresh areas for investigation.” Meanwhile, Manish Gupta, Chairman and CEO of Indegene Limited, reinforced the commitment to enabling future-ready healthcare solutions, emphasizing the role of their organization as catalysts for change in community health.
This collaboration not only boosts the scientific capabilities at IISc but also aligns with global efforts to address some of the most pressing health challenges of our time. Through such partnerships, the pathway to innovative healthcare solutions becomes clearer, potentially leading to groundbreaking treatments for millions affected by these debilitating diseases.
