ED secures custody of BRS leader K Kavitha in Delhi Liquor Policy Case

In a significant development from the national capital, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha will remain in the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) custody until March 23. The custody pertains to the ongoing investigation into the controversial Delhi liquor policy case, as declared by a court in Delhi today. K Kavitha, notably the daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), is embroiled in allegations that suggest a conspiracy with leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in exchange for favours linked to the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy.

The arrest and subsequent legal proceedings have garnered significant attention, highlighting a “classic case of abuse,” according to Ms. Kavitha’s legal representation. The BRS leader was apprehended at her residence in Hyderabad by the ED and was transported to Delhi, where she underwent medical examinations as part of the standard protocol following her arrest.

This legal action trails nearly two months after the ED’s initial summons to the 45-year-old political figure. Over the past year, Kavitha was questioned thrice by the central agency, with her statements recorded under the stringent Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The case has also seen the involvement of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who recently appeared before a Delhi court in response to summons by the ED. The Rouse Avenue Court has granted him bail in two complaints associated with the Delhi liquor policy case.

The ongoing case involving K Kavitha and the ED underlines the intricate connections between political influence and policy-making processes. The scrutiny of the scrapped Delhi liquor policy and the allegations of favouritism highlight the challenges of maintaining transparency and integrity within the political and legal framework. The involvement of high-profile political figures and the legal proceedings offer a critical insight into the mechanisms of accountability and the rule of law in India.
