ECO EDISON sets sail: Pioneering America’s offshore wind energy future
In a significant advancement for America’s offshore wind energy sector, the first-ever U.S.-built, owned, and crewed offshore wind service operations vessel (SOV), named ECO EDISON, was officially christened this past weekend in Louisiana. The vessel, named after Jennifer Scalise, will serve the operational needs of Ørsted and Eversource’s South Fork Wind, Revolution Wind, and Sunrise Wind projects.
ECO EDISON stands out as the first U.S.-flagged offshore wind SOV, embodying Ørsted’s commitment to fostering a robust domestic offshore energy supply chain. The construction of ECO EDISON involved over 600 workers who dedicated nearly one million work hours across ECO’s in-house shipyards in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida. The vessel boasts components sourced from 34 states, showcasing a nationwide collaborative effort in its creation.

The 262-foot long ECO EDISON is designed as a liveaboard vessel, providing a floating, year-round homebase for 60 pioneering American offshore wind turbine technicians. These technicians will perform critical maintenance and servicing tasks for the wind turbines over their operational lifespan.

ECO EDISON features advanced safety technologies and amenities to ensure comfort and safety at sea. It is equipped with a “walk to work” motion-compensated gangway and a smaller “daughter” craft for efficient crew maneuvering across the wind farms. Powering the vessel are two Cat® 3512E engines from Caterpillar Marine, highlighting the potential for existing American manufacturers to contribute significantly to the offshore wind sector. These engines are built for durability and future readiness, capable of being converted to dual-fuel methanol.
