The legal battle between actor-producer Dhanush and actress Nayanthara, along with her filmmaker husband Vignesh Shivan, has escalated. Dhanush’s production company, Wunderbar Films Private Limited, has filed a civil suit seeking damages worth ₹10 million (₹1 crore), accusing the couple of copyright infringement related to the film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. The lawsuit claims that the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale used behind-the-scenes footage from the film without proper authorization.
The affidavit further alleges unprofessional conduct by Vignesh Shivan during the making of the 2015 film. It states that the director was overly focused on Nayanthara, the film’s leading lady, to the detriment of other cast and crew members.
Nayanthara, Vignesh Shivan Accused of Using BTS Footage Without Approval
Dhanush’s legal team contends that Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale, released on Netflix on November 18, 2023, included unauthorized clips from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which was produced by Wunderbar Films Private Limited. The film marked the beginning of Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan’s relationship, as the two met on set before eventually getting married.
Legal documents allege that Vignesh Shivan neglected other actors during filming, prioritizing multiple re-takes of Nayanthara’s scenes. The affidavit describes his approach as “unprofessional,” suggesting that the film’s production suffered due to his exclusive focus on the actress.
In December 2023, Dhanush’s legal team issued a notice demanding the immediate removal of the allegedly infringing content from the Netflix documentary. The notice warned that failure to comply would lead to legal consequences, including a ₹100 million (₹10 crore) damages claim against Nayanthara and Netflix India.
Court Hearing Set Amidst Ongoing Dispute
The legal dispute reached the Madras High Court, where an interim injunction was sought against the documentary. However, as the docu-drama had already been released on Netflix, the court declined to issue a temporary stay. Instead, the court has set a final hearing for April 9, 2025, when the matter will be reviewed in full.
Nayanthara’s Response and Open Letter to Dhanush
Ahead of the documentary’s release, Nayanthara publicly responded to the legal challenge by penning an open letter to Dhanush. She argued that the disputed clip—reported to be a three-second behind-the-scenes video—was recorded on her personal phone, implying that she had every right to use it.
In the letter, she also addressed her past working relationship with Dhanush, stating that “courage only comes from truth.” The message was widely interpreted as a firm rebuttal of the legal claims, reinforcing her stance that the footage in question did not warrant such a lawsuit.
Netflix’s Position and Industry Implications
The involvement of Netflix India adds another layer to the legal battle. If the court rules in Dhanush’s favor, it could set a precedent for streaming platforms’ liability in copyright disputes, especially in cases where archival footage is used without explicit clearance. The lawsuit may also serve as a cautionary tale for filmmakers repurposing older content for documentaries or promotional materials.
The entertainment industry is closely watching how the case unfolds, as its outcome could influence how production houses and streaming giants handle intellectual property disputes in the future.
What’s Next for Dhanush, Nayanthara, and Vignesh Shivan?
While the lawsuit continues, all three individuals remain active in their careers. Dhanush is currently working on upcoming projects under his production house, Wunderbar Films, while Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan are engaged in new film ventures despite the legal challenges.
The April 2025 hearing is expected to determine whether Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale violated copyright laws or if the lawsuit will be dismissed due to insufficient grounds. Until then, the conflict between Wunderbar Films Private Limited and Netflix India remains unresolved.
