Canada Growth Fund invests in Svante to advance carbon capture technology

In a significant move to bolster carbon capture technology, Canada Growth Fund Inc. (CGF) has announced a commitment of up to US$100 million to Svante Technologies Inc., a prominent provider of carbon capture and removal solutions headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. This substantial investment aims to accelerate the development and construction of Svante’s commercial carbon capture projects in both Canada and the United States.

Investment Details and Strategic Goals

Canada Growth Fund, tasked with supporting Canadian clean technology businesses at the commercialisation stage, is set to provide its funding in two tranches. The first tranche of US$50 million will be allocated immediately to enhance and mitigate risks associated with Svante’s first-of-a-kind (FOAK) commercial projects. The second tranche, also up to US$50 million, will be contingent on project-specific needs, tailored to match Svante’s capital requirements for ongoing and future projects in collaboration with co-development partners.

Patrick Charbonneau, President and CEO of Canada Growth Fund Investment Management Inc., highlighted the strategic importance of this investment. “CGF is focused on accelerating the deployment of key Canadian carbon capture technologies, scaling up manufacturing, and showcasing Canadian innovations on the global stage,” Charbonneau stated. “Svante presents a significant market opportunity both internationally and domestically, and we are eager to support their growth.”

Impact on Svante Technologies

Claude Letourneau, Svante’s President and CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the investment, calling it transformative for the company. “This investment by CGF is pivotal for Svante,” Letourneau said. “It complements our existing US$145 million capital investment in our new carbon capture filter manufacturing facility in Vancouver. This financial boost will enhance our Integrated Project Development Services, enabling us to provide both advisory expertise and financing for our customers, helping them de-risk FOAK projects.”

Svante is constructing a 141,000 square-foot facility in Burnaby, British Columbia, which will produce filters capable of capturing 10 million tonnes of CO2 annually. This facility will also serve as the company’s global headquarters and R&D centre. The initial tranche of the investment will be used to advance commercial development and support FOAK project funding.

Market and Regulatory Context

The investment aligns with CGF’s mandate to support leading Canadian cleantech companies, protect Canadian intellectual property and jobs, and foster innovation. The carbon capture and sequestration market is expanding, driven by supportive regulations in Canada, the United States, and Europe, which underscores the growing demand for emissions reduction and removal technologies.

Svante Technologies is recognised for its innovative approach, including the development of nanoengineered filters and modular rotary contactor machines designed to capture and remove CO2 from industrial emissions and the atmosphere in an environmentally responsible manner.
